2008 Gracianna Bacigalupi Zinfandel
A few weeks ago we enjoyed a bottle of 2008 Gracianna Bacigalupi Zinfandel. It is definitely a new favorite. This particular varietal and vintage was made from grapes sourced from the Russian River Valley AVA and along with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay; Zinfandel does very well in this region. This is no exception. (Click photo for Hi-Res)
Gracianna has found a way to capture the land in its wines and the 2008 Zinfandel carries this essence throughout. Balanced, earthy, and not as tannic as I thought it might be. We uncorked this well ahead of our tasting to allow it to open up and it did so very well resulting in the release of berries and a silky, yet bold mouth feel. I like a little more pop from the fruit in a Zinfandel, but this has a more subtle dark fruit impression. I would also suggest pairing with a spicy and rich meal; think spicy beef with rich aioli because that’s what I did!
This is a great Zinfandel and is worthy of its accolades; winner of Gold at the 2010 Sonoma County Harvest Fair. This varietal rounds out a great family of wines including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and will meet the expectations of everyone who enjoys Zinfandel. The Russian River Valley wineries continue to produce great wine and Gracianna Winery is one to keep your eye on.
